Miami Gardens couple reports safety hazard to no avail

MIAMI GARDENS, Florida –Christopher Mallard said that each day he and his wife take time to relax outside their home in Miami Gardens. It has been difficult to do when they are forced to stare at a danger to their safety over which they feel helpless.

Hurricane season makes gaping holes in a decaying utility pole all the more dangerous. His wife, Lynda Mallard, said she was very worried.

They were able to sympathize with the inhabitants of the Citrus Islands of Fort Lauderdale. They watched in horror as a video showed how one of the posts nearly injured a woman walking her dogs.

Christopher Mallard said he understood their situation. AT&T also owns the neglected Miami Gardens utility pole. He worries that the transformer will fall on the trees below.

There are also power, cable, telephone and Internet lines. In fact, when their cable service went down, a technician from Comcast refused to access the lines.

“He told me it was a danger. That he couldn’t climb the pole. He wouldn’t dare get on the post because it’s hollow, ”said Christopher Mallard.

The electric pole has a 4 inch deep crack in the middle. The Mallards met with three AT&T representatives a few months ago. They saw them take pictures of the electric pole.

“Nothing happened,” Lynda Mallard said. “I tried, it was before the hurricane season in February, to try to solve this problem. Obviously they don’t care … they need to get someone here to do this thing. It is not sure at all. “

Hurricane season begins Tuesday.

There was progress for residents of the Citrus Islands on Thursday. Fort Lauderdale officials have met with AT&T to discuss the issue. AT&T told officials they would assess and replace the poles.

In Florida, AT&T owns 213,210 utility poles and FPL owns 425,700. A bill passed by the state legislature, but not yet enacted, would allow the Florida Public Service Commission to require inspection of utility poles. and order repair and replacement.

AT&T issued this statement:

We are working to replace the damaged utility pole at Miami Gardens as quickly as possible. Our equipment can be found both on our own poles and on poles owned by other utility companies.
