Odessa Police Department urges security measures for Labor Day
ODESSA, Texas — Labor Day weekend means more travelers on the road and a bigger police presence.
The Odessa Police Department seeks to limit drunk driving, underage drinking or accidents here in the basin.
The holiday weekend means more social gatherings potentially involving alcohol. Combine that with more drivers on the road this weekend, and you get more potentially dangerous situations.
“You see a lot more drunk drivers, just distracted drivers rushing to where they’re trying to go,” said Corporal Chris Adams of the Odessa Police Department.
Odessa police take measures to prevent drunk drivers. They will strategically patrol certain areas where they know there will be alcohol.
“We’re doing a lot more about when bars close, just to make sure everyone is doing the right thing,” the cape said. Adams.
“You’re going to see a lot more proactive policing when it comes to having officers in the bar area. Just making sure people don’t pass out while driving or make the wrong decision to go drink and drive.
The police ask those who drink to make a plan.
“If you’re going to drink, make sure you do it responsibly,” the Cpl said. Adams. “Get a ride, call a friend, call an Uber. There are so many other options than going there and getting behind the wheel of a car drunk.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, soldiers issued more than 71,000 citations and warnings last Labor Day weekend. Drivers must continue to obey the rules of the road in order to avoid accidents and potentially tickets.
