Safety Guide: How To Protect Your Health From Smog – Pakistan

Every winter, cities in the upper and central part of Pakistan wear a blanket of fog; which is mainly due to a particular climatic zoning, but the problem is getting worse every year. Pollutants emitted by the surface add to the fog and thicken it, creating “smog”.

The problem has intensified in recent decades due to rapid and sustained industrialization and the addition of thousands of vehicles. In December and January, smog slows everything down and on some occasions stops life.

The Punjab is a densely populated province and in terms of “loss of human productivity” one can calculate the negative impact on the financial health of the country if a large part of the population is made unproductive.

Lahore is also one of the cities most affected by smog in the world.

Here are some tips to protect yourself and your family from smog.

For the people

  • Use surgical or other masks

  • Remove contact lenses and use regular reading glasses

  • Do not smoke and if this is not possible reduce consumption

  • Drink extra water and hot tea

  • Blow your nose regularly to clean up contaminants

  • Wash your hands, face and any exposed body part every time you go inside after going out

  • Avoid going out unnecessarily

  • Do NOT stop on the road even if you cannot see. Park on the side of the road away from traffic.

  • Slow down while driving

  • Use fog lights

  • DO NOT use high beams

  • Avoid going to crowded areas, especially those prone to traffic jams
